Licenses and regulatory fees for your trade or business paid annually to state or local governments are generally deductible. Legal fees related to doing or keeping your job, such as those you paid to defend yourself against criminal charges arising out of your trade or business, may be deductible on Schedule A (Form 1040) if you itemize deductions. The cost of food and beverages you provide primarily to your employees on your business premises is deductible. This includes the cost of maintaining the facilities for providing the food and beverages.

Where does commission expense belong?

Sales commissions are a key component of a company's selling expense, and so are normally considered part of operating activities. Usually, they are listed within the selling, general, and administrative expenses section of the income statement.

If you do not carry on your business or investment activity to make a profit, you cannot use a loss from the activity to offset other income. Activities you do as a hobby, or mainly for sport or recreation, are often not entered into for profit. If you carry on your business activity without the intention of making a profit, you cannot use a loss from it to offset other income.

The partner or shareholder must use that reduced adjusted basis to figure cost depletion, or its gain or loss, if the partnership or S corporation disposes of the property. You can deduct entertainment expenses directly related to business meetings of your employees, partners, stockholders, agents, or directors.
